Acne scarring is a constant reminder of the ravages of teen acne, and sometimes you struggle with acne most of your life. In fact, up to 95% of those who’ve had acne may live with some sort of scarring — an ever-present and sour reminder of those skin eruptions from long ago.
Dr. Pamela Kimbrough and the Life’s Cycle team, with offices in Norman and Ardmore, Oklahoma, know that your emotional and physical health are closely connected, and your feelings about how you look affect your quality of life. We offer an exciting treatment that has proved to be very successful for our patients who live with the visible reminders of acne: laser therapy.
A primer of acne scars
There are several different types of acne scars caused by different skin problems, including collagen overproduction. Your scars may be shallow, deep, raised, or depressed.
You’re more likely to have scarring if your acne was or is severe. This is called cystic acne. Not only is it associated with the largest skin blemishes, but it also develops deep under the skin. The cysts are a mixture of concentrated oil, bacteria, and dry skin.
Is there a treatment that noticeably reduces the appearance of acne scars?
Fortunately, there is, and Life’s Cycle offers it. We provide laser therapy treatments using intense pulsed light (IPL) rejuvenation. We’re able to customize the amount of light energy pulses you receive and their wavelength strength, depending on your scarring. IPL treatments emit varying pulsating light wavelengths, unlike traditional lasers, which only deliver one. IPL treatments also warm your treatment area and even out the peaks and valleys caused by scarring.
We talk to you about the many benefits of IPL laser therapy and answer any questions you may have. The advantages of IPL treatments include:
- Comfortable treatment
- Brief sessions, typically 30 minutes each
- Reverses more than one type of damage and is effective on rosacea and brown spots as well as acne scars
- Any part of the body can be treated, in case you have acne scarring on your shoulders or back too
IPL laser treatments have turned the skin-care industry upside down in a good way, because after treatment, your skin goes into hyper collagen and elastin production mode. These two proteins are what give your skin its elasticity.
Good preparation is essential for successful IPL laser therapy
Before you receive treatment, it’s important that you stay out of the sun for a minimum of six weeks. We instruct you also to forgo taking Accutane for two months and Retin-A products for two weeks if those are part of your regimen. We also create a specific pre-treatment skin-care plan for you and prescribe special sunscreen.
You’re in good hands with our laser treatment provider, Peggy Dickson, DNA, who has nearly two decades of experience working in dermatology. She performs laser treatments gently and with great care.
What’s an IPL laser therapy treatment like?
First, we optimize your comfort by applying a soothing gel to the area we’re treating. Then we use a small handheld device to send the light pulses — each lasting less than a second — to your skin. You might feel as though we’re gently snapping tiny rubber bands on your skin, but we think you’ll be surprised at how little discomfort you feel.
Most patients need anywhere from three to five treatments, and Dr. Kimbrough assesses how your skin reacts to them. Your skin’s response, your aesthetic goals, and your individual medical history all inform the treatment plan she creates.
What happens after IPL laser treatment?
We go over with you what will happen with your skin in the post-treatment stage. You can expect to have some swelling, redness, and “chocolate chipping,” or tiny places on your treated skin’s surface that are dry and darkened. After about a week, the chocolate chipping falls off your skin, and what’s revealed is the best part: smoother, rejuvenated skin!
The minor visible signs you’ll have during about a week of healing can easily be covered with makeup. You can immediately to normal life following a treatment.
